C.C.A. Treated Pine - is used by Deckscapes  on most of the decking substructure. Pine can also be used as decking, (including in applications over or near water). However, being a softer timber it is best used in low-traffic areas. Pine can be stained to specific colour requirements.
Pine requires regular treatment and will develop fine cracks over time.

The quality is however very good and is harvested from local and sustainable forests which means we are supporting local business.

Balau is used worldwide but originates in Malaysia. In the last 20 years that it has become well known in the South African construction industry. It has become the premier choice for external and marine applications, because of its density and durability.

Description:

The heartwood is light brown to yellowish light brown gradually turning dark brown. As the timber weathers it turns a silvery grey. Yellow Balau looks very much like teak in colour .The grain ranges from straight to spiraled and interlocked. The texture varies from fine to coarse.  We use Balau for its durability, strength, seasoning and mechanical properties. For centuries Balau has been used for shipbuilding, heavy-duty furniture, heavy construction and is popular as a result of it’s excellent strength and weather resistant qualities. Nailing is difficult to impossible, and pre boring is essential when using screws. Workability with hand tools is difficult but it machines well. The use of stainless steel screws is advised. Shrinkage occurs so tolerance must be allowed for.

The tree is commonly attacked by Pinhole Borer Beetle which leaves the timber with small and scattered pattern of small holes referred to as “Pin hole”
This attack occurs only in tree form or when the log is freshly felled. It is a characteristic of Balau and it does not affect the strength of the timber in any way. There is a saying in the industry, “If there is no pin hole – then it is not Balau”. Knots can be present but they are usually sound.
Occasionally, acidic reactions occur when the balau timber is in contact with ferrous metals. This is seen as black “ink like” markings, and these fade in time. Leaching (loss of natural oil from the timber) may occur during the first wet season after installation but this gradually reduces after several seasons.

Teak is one of the hardest and most durable of the African hardwood trees, and is amongst the most beautiful timbers in the world, with a fine, close grain and deep, rich natural colour.

Harvested from the vast forest of the Kalahari sand veldt, the largest continuous stretch of sand in the world, under the watchful supervision of the Forestry Commission and the Forest Stewardship Council. 

Teak comes mainly from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Angola & The Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is very hard and durable,  and is used mainly for joinery and furniture and counter tops, boat building, flooring and decking.
